NEWBERRY, S.C. - After a scoreless first period, the Newberry College Lady Indians came out firing to down Lander University, 4-0, in soccer action at the Newberry soccer complex. Freshman Elyse Clark (Charleston, S.C.) scored the game winner in the 50th minute, and then added Newberry's third goal at 56:33.
Newberry (4-1-1) executed a fantastic defensive game plan, allowing just six shots to Lander (1-4-0), and only two shots on goal on the afternoon. On the other hand, the Lady Indians took 12 shots on goal and 19 total, including 14 after intermission alone.
Reigning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) assisted the first three Newberry goals. Brooke Tumblin (Florence, S.C.) notched the Lady Indians' second goal at 51:53 off assists from Woiwode and Clark, and put the final tally on the board unassisted at the 65:34 mark.
With the score 2-0, Woiwode fired a corner kick that sailed over most of the defense, finding Clark at the opposite post where she finished with a header past Lander keeper Rachael Hine (Stockton-on-Tees, England).
Newberry used 24 players in the contest, most of them getting 20 minutes or more on the field.
"Overall, what was good was that the whole team performed," Newberry head coach Juan Pablo Favero said. "We put players in there, some that haven't had an opportunity in tighter games, and they did their jobs well.
"I believe Lander is a better team than its 1-4 record. To our credit, we took it to them and dominated a game we needed to win. The stats and the score reflect that we controlled the game, although we let them hang in a little too long in the first half.
"We're defending very well as a team, and that is something that we work on very hard beginning in the preseason. Our offense is coming together; we're getting the burst now that was missing the first two [home] games where we were letting opponents come in and beat us up a little."
Newberry will face SAC opponent and regionally-ranked Catawba College Saturday afternoon at 3, while Lander faces Peach Belt foe Armstrong Atlantic on the road at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
