NEWBERRY, S.C. – Vicki Farquar scored in the 97th minute in the first overtime period to give Carson-Newman (13-3, 6-1 South Atlantic) the 3-2 victory over Newberry (7-6-2, 3-4 SAC) in the team’s final regular season South Atlantic Conference match of the season. Danielle Beckerle recorded nine saves in the match for Newberry.
"I was extremely proud with the team’s effort and overall performance today," stated head coach Juan Pablo Favero. "We played one of the best teams in the nation and were truly unlucky to lose the game in over-time on such a fluke of a goal with the deflection. A tie would have been a fair result, but we have proved to ourselves that we can play with anyone in the country."
The Lady Eagles outshot Newberry, 22-7 and had 11 corner kicks to Newberry’s one. Carson-Newman had 17 fouls to the Lady Indians 7 and Beckerle was outstanding in the net, recording nine saves to Carson-Newman’s Nyssa Griffin’s three.
Carson-Newman struck early on as Rebecca Angus sent a long lob over the keeper from approximately 45 yards out in the third minute of play to put Carson-Newman up 1-0. Beckerle had to fight the sun while trying to follow the ball, but the ball went over her head and into the net as Angus aimed to dump the ball into play on the net.
The Lady Indians fought back and tied the match in the 16th minute as Alie Brady scored her second goal of the season. Brady dribbled to the center of the field and fired the ball to the right of Griffin and into the net for Newberry’s first goal of the afternoon.
Newberry took a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute as Elyse Clark sent a rebound shot of Brady’s and sent it past Griffin. The goal was Clark’s fifth of the season and Brady’s fourth assist in 2005.
The Lady Eagles tied the match at 2-2 just under five minutes later in the 53rd minute as Brittany Moore sent the ball toward the net on a free kick and Claire Ramsdale put it past a diving Beckerle.
In the 97th minute of overtime, Farquar put the ball in the net off a deflection of a crowd of players in the box. The Lady Eagles had several chances to score late in the second half of regulation, but stellar defense and saves by Beckerle and Co., sent the match into overtime.
Both teams, finishing in the top four in the conference, will host the first round of the 2005 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Carson-Newman is expected to play host to Wingate while Newberry will host Lenoir-Rhyne.
"We know we have a very tough game on Tuesday against a very good L-R team, who has been slaying top rated teams for the last two weeks since we played them," concluded Favero. "We now have 48 hours to prepare and get ready for a fun play-off game."
The Indians won a double overtime thriller over Lenoir-Rhyne at home on Oct. 15 earlier this season. Next Tuesday's match-up will begin at 2 p.m. at the Newberry Soccer Complex. Exact pairings and match times for the first round of the tournament will be announced soon. Newberry will also host the tournament semifinals and final championship match. The tournament semifinals will take place on Friday, Nov. 4 at Noon and 3 p.m. with the championship match occurring on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m.
