Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College produced its second 11-run game in a row, but this time played defense as well as offense, en route to a 11-2 victory over Claflin University on an unusually warm Thursday afternoon at Kirkland Field. The Indians (5-3) previously knocked off Claflin (2-6) in Orangeburg in come-from-behind fashion on February 5.
Newberry held a 3-1 advantage after five innings, but broke away in the next two frames, using five safeties, two bases on balls, and a Claflin error to score seven runs. During the scoring spree, Dustin Smith (Conway, S.C.) doubled twice and Anthony Dillenger (Gaffney, S.C.) hit his own two-bagger to pick up three and two RBI, respectively.
Sophomore Russell Haltiwanger (Simpsonville, S.C.) picked up his third win of the young season by pitching five innings of one-hit, one-run baseball, and striking out four. Senior Billy Alm (Pine Plains, N.Y.) finished the game and recorded his season-first save, being hit only twice and fanning three. Claflin pitcher DeMece Williams, a Newberry native, had his homecoming spoiled, allowing five hits and three runs in the loss.
Claflin scored its fourth-inning run with aggressive base running by Johnathan Ritter (Eutawville, S.C.) and David Hudsons bat. Ritter reached on balls, stole second, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Hudson (Lexington, S.C.) then singled to center to put Claflin within a run of Newberry. The Panthers capitalized on three Indian errors to score Darryl Davis (Eutawville, S.C.), the only Claflin batter to get a hit in the inning.
In addition to Smiths and Dillengers heroics, Indian outfielder Stuart Kay (Greer, S.C.) plated two baserunners on a 2-for-3 day. Freshman Ryan Easterby (Charleston, S.C.) had two safeties and a RBI, and Dean Walker (Afton, Tenn.) and Gilmore Stevens (Edgefield, S.C.) each singled, scored, and batted in a run.
Newberry will next travel to Augusta State next Tuesday, with the first pitch slated for 2 p.m.
