NEWBERRY, S.C. — Riding the momentum of a stunning late-game rally, the Newberry College men's lacrosse team has punched its ticket to the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Championship. The Wolves now turn their focus to a highly anticipated showdown with top-seeded Wingate, as they look to cap their postseason run with a statement victory.
Newberry earned its place in the championship in dramatic fashion, orchestrating a miraculous comeback against No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne in the semifinal round. Trailing by three goals with just five minutes remaining, the Wolves refused to back down, storming back with a flurry of late scores to complete the thrilling rally and secure their spot in the title game.
Awaiting Newberry is a familiar foe in top-seeded Wingate. The matchup presents an opportunity for redemption after last season's heartbreaking conference quarterfinal loss, when the Bulldogs edged the Wolves in double overtime on Newberry's home turf.
The two teams also met earlier this season, with Wingate claiming a 16-12 victory. The Wolves will look to flip the script this time around, fueled by both the sting of past defeats and the confidence gained from their resilient semifinal performance.
Originally scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m., the SAC Championship has been moved to Sunday at 3 p.m. due to impending weather. The contest will be held at the Matthews Sportsplex in Matthews, North Carolina.
