NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry men's lacrosse claimed the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) title on Sunday afternoon with a 15-11 victory over Wingate, securing an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
The championship run was anything but easy for the Wolves, who navigated a dramatic and demanding conference tournament slate. Newberry opened postseason play at home against Lenoir-Rhyne, staging a remarkable comeback from a three-goal deficit late in the contest. The Wolves surged in the closing minutes to complete a thrilling 16-15 win in the final moments and advance to the championship game.
In the SAC Championship, Newberry once again faced Wingate in a high-stakes rematch. The Bulldogs had taken the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season, defeating the Wolves 16-12 in Newberry. However, the Wolves flipped the script when it mattered most, delivering a complete performance to secure the conference crown and avenge the earlier loss.
With the championship win, Newberry now turns its attention to the NCAA Tournament, where the Wolves will travel to Romeoville, Illinois, to face Lewis University. The first-round matchup is set for Sunday, May 10, at 2:00 p.m. ET (1:00 p.m. CT). This marks the second meeting of the season and the third all-time matchup between the programs. Earlier this year, Newberry fell on the road to Lewis, 15-8, and also dropped a narrow 12-10 decision at home last season. The Wolves will look to earn redemption on the national stage as they open tournament play.
