HILTON HEAD, SC - The Newberry Wolves men's tennis team came up just short in a tightly contested matchup Monday afternoon, falling 4-3 to West Virginia State at Hilton Head Island.
West Virginia State took the early advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. The Newberry pair of Martin Posada Garcia and Noel Bartz secured the Wolves' lone doubles victory with a 7-5 win at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, the Wolves earned three wins to keep the match competitive throughout the afternoon.
Senthen Reddy delivered a strong performance at No. 2 singles, defeating Patchara Suklian in straight sets. Reddy opened with a 6-3 win in the first set before closing out the match with a 7-6 victory in a tight tiebreak.
Sohei Kamiyama also picked up a point for Newberry at No. 4 singles. After dropping the first set, Kamiyama responded with a 6-2 win in the second before securing the match with a 10-7 victory in the deciding tiebreak.
Noel Bartz added the Wolves' third singles win at No. 5. Bartz battled back after splitting the first two sets and dominated the match tiebreak to earn the point with a 10-3 finish.
Another highlight of the afternoon came during singles play as both Daniel Watson and Lucas Mruk engaged in several long, competitive rallies in their respective matches. Watson battled at the top of the lineup, showing persistence from the baseline and forcing extended exchanges throughout his match. Mruk also fought through multiple lengthy points, displaying strong defensive play and determination as he worked to stay in rallies and challenge his opponent. Despite the results, both Wolves demonstrated grit and endurance during some of the match's most hard-fought points.
Despite the strong efforts in singles play, the Yellow Jackets secured the overall victory by taking three singles matches along with the doubles point. The Wolves will return to the courts tomorrow March 10th against Fairmount state.Â
