Former Newberry men's lacrosse star
Zach Thompson was taken in the fourth round of the National Lacrosse League Draft Sunday.
Thompson was the 56
th overall pick by the Saskatchewan Rush, making him the third highest NCAA Division 2 player taken in this year's draft.
He will join fellow 2024 seniors Curtis Butka (58
th pick) and
Scott Reed (87
th pick) who were also drafted by Saskatchewan in the 2023 NLL draft.
The Ottawa, Ontario native, Thompson was second on the team in points in 2024, scoring 24 goals, leading the team with a school record 37 assists for 61 points. He also finished second on the team in ground balls with 26. His 61 points are the sixth best single season total in school history.
After transferring from Stony Brook, Thompson played in 49 games during his three years at Newberry College, scoring 45 goals, dishing out 73 assists for 118 career points.
His 73 assists are second best, and 118 points are fifth best in school history.
Thompson helped lead the Wolves to a 33-16 overall record during his three seasons including an 18-10 mark in South Atlantic Conference play.
He scored a career-high and school record seven assists in the Wolves' 22-6 victory over Lynn on February 10, 2024.
Thompson scored six man-up goals in his career at Newberry, tied for ninth best in school history.
