ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Completing their first tournament of the spring season, the Newberry College women's golf team took home a second place finish at the Coastal Georgia Winter Invite over two rounds on Monday and Tuesday.
The Wolves shot a combined +49 to finish nine strokes back of the leaders, Southeastern University (Fla.). Coastal Georgia, the tournament's host, finished six shots back of Newberry in third and Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta, was fourth at +58.
Nicole Strydom showed the way for the Wolves, pairing a 1-under 71 yesterday with a 78 today to finish +5 and in sole possession of second place on the individual leaderboard. Strydom sank six birdies over her two rounds, the most in the field. Newberry made 16 birdies as a team which was also the high mark for the tournament.
Noelia Adkins was three shots behind Strydom in sixth place. She had a steady two days with back-to-back rounds of 76. Adkins' five birdies were tied for second most amongst her competitors and she led the field in par-3 scoring at an average of 2.88 strokes per hole.
Sofia Liden was 16th on the leaderboard and 16-over for the tournament after shooting 79 yesterday and 81 today.
Julie Hoscalkova shot 79-87 to round off the Wolves' scorers.
Ashton Thomas improved from an 86 to an 85 from Round One to Round Two.
Newberry returns to action in two weeks on Feb. 26 and 27 at the Low Tide Intercollegiate at Dunes West Golf Club in Charleston.
