ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Coming off back-to-back wins to open the season, the Newberry College women's golf team nearly captured first place again at the St. Simons Intercollegiate tournament on Monday and Tuesday, this time taking home second place.
The Wolves put together a combined score of 614 over the two-round, two-day tournament, just four shots behind Lincoln Memorial. Catawba was one shot behind Newberry in third (615), with Coker (621) and Shorter (623) completing the top-five.
After shooting a team score of 313 on Monday, the Wolves greatly improved Tuesday and shot a 301 to catapult up the leaderboard.
The Wolves were led by junior
Noelia Adkins' two-round total of 147. On the par-72 course, Adkins shot 76-71 to earn a second-place finish overall in a field of 93 players. She also had the most birdies (8) of all players during the tournament.
Sofia Liden carded a 77 on Day 1 and improved a stroke to 76 today – a common thread for the team – to finish in a tie for 11th.
Sophomore
Nicole Strydom shot 79 yesterday and 78 today, and
Aubree Clements had the greatest improvement from her first round, scoring a 76 today after an 82 on Monday.
Also competing for the Wolves was
Julie Hoscalkova, who turned in a pair of 81s as every Wolf finished inside the top-50.
Newberry will take a week off before competing in its final tournament this fall, the Converse Fall Invite on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 30-31.
