JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Newberry and Carson-Newman split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
Game One
Beau Thompson singled to left-centerfield in the top of the second inning, and Aiden Baur would follow with a double to score Thompson and give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived as The Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run to tie the game.
The score remained tied until the fourth inning. Luke Orr would lead off with a single. Jack Harris followed with a double to put runners at second and third for Thompson. Beau singled to centerfield to score Orr and give Newberry a one-run lead. Harris then scored on a wild pitch for the Wolves' third run of the inning. Later in the inning, Rhett Jolly singled with two outs to score two more and make it a 5-1 game. Newberry added a run in the fifth and one in the seventh to cruise to a 7-1 win.
Jack Harris led the Wolves at the plate, going 3-4 with a double and one RBI. Colin Allman finished the game 2-4 with a home run, and Thompson was 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Tomas Sorcia (1-1) picked up the win allowing one run on three hits and striking out eight in a complete-game performance.
GAME TWO
Newberry's offense came out hot in game two. In the top of the first, Allman would single to lead off the game. He would then steal second and advance to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Allman then scored on a single by Orr to plate the first run. RBI singles by Harris and Thompson gave the Wolves a 3-0 lead after their first at-bat. The Eagles responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 3-2 game.
The two teams each scored one run in the fourth to make the score 4-3. Allman walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zane Tarrance in the top of the fifth. Orr followed with a single to leftfield, scoring Allman and making it a 5-3 game. The Wolves continued to hold the two-run lead as the game headed to the bottom of the ninth. The Eagles rallied in the ninth for three runs to take a come from behind victory to earn a split of the doubleheader.
Orr led the Newberry offense going 2-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Allman was 2-4 with two runs scored. Jacob Jeffcoat (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs in a relief appearance.
