NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry took down Augusta University 6-2 in the Wolves home opener Tuesday night.
After a scoreless first inning, Augusta would scratch a run across in the top of the second; however, their lead would be short-lived. Newberry would get on the board in the top of the second. Nick Butler led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a one-out single by Braylin Marine. After Butler stole third, he would score on a sacrifice bunt by Rhett Jolly to tie the game at one.
The Jaguars again plated a run in the top of the third to regain the lead. The Wolves answered with a three-run third to take their first lead of the game. Colin Allman ripped a one-out single, and Zane Tarrance drew a walk. The two base runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Luke Orr then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Allman to score and tie the game. A single through the left side of the infield by Jack Harris allowed Tarrance to score and give Newberry the lead. Harris then stole second base and scored on a double by Butler to make it a 4-2 game.
The score remained 4-2 until the bottom of the seventh when Newberry took advantage of two errors and scores two insurance runs.
Nick Butler led the Wolves at the plate, going 2-3 with a double, run scored, and RBI, while Orr was 1-3 with two runs driven in. In a game that saw seven different pitchers throw for Newberry, Bryce Peterson (1-0) picked up his first career win, allowing two hits and striking out two in one inning of relief.
