PEMBROKE, N.C. – Newberry is making its NCAA-era debut in the top 10 after being voted No. 9 in the latest edition of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Division II poll.
Newberry has not appeared inside the top 10 since the program was ranked as high as No. 7 during the 1977 season when it played as a member of the NAIA. The Wolves went 4-0 last week, including their fourth South Atlantic Conference series sweep of the season, and extended their winning streak to 12 games overall.
The Wolves' seven-spot jump from last week's No. 16 ranking was the nation's biggest in this week's poll. Tuesday night's opponent, Mount Olive, returned to the national rankings at No. 24 following a one-week disappearance from the poll. Fellow SAC institution Catawba is slotted 14th this week, while 2019 opponent North Greenville held at No. 5.
Newberry's four-week stay in the national polls is also its best in the NCAA era.
The Wolves are ranked 12th in this week's
Collegiate Baseball poll, up from No. 20 a week ago and the third consecutive week the Wolves have been named in the organization's top 30.
The Wolves are also ranked second in the NCBWA's Southeast Region poll, tying the school record for best regional ranking. The official NCAA regional rankings, which determine postseason selection and seeding, will be released weekly beginning Wednesday, April 24.
Newberry faces Mount Olive, which is ranked fourth in the regional poll in addition to its No. 24 national ranking, tonight at 6:00 p.m. at the Smith Road Complex, where the Wolves boast an unblemished 20-0 record in 2019.
