Wolves have 10 players score in 14-7 win over Davis & Elkins

Freije and Messersmith notch first career goals

ELKINS, W. VA. – The Wolves had 10 players score on their way to a 14-7 win over Elkins and Davis Monday afternoon.
 
Newberry (6-0, 0-0 SAC) was led offensive by Stone Boone who had a game-high four points (two goals, two assists) and reigning SAC Offensive Player of the Week Dylan Mansur had three points (two goals, one assists). Jeremy Ross and Zachary Sunderland added two goals apiece for the Wolves. Cole Bates, Belton Bryan, Justin Walsh and Kobie Jordan score one goal each. Justin Messersmith and Alex Freije rounded out the scoring for the Wolves, getting their first collegiate goals of their careers.
 
The Scarlet and Grey got out to a very fast start, opening up the game the game to an 8-0 lead into the second quarter. The wealth was spread around those first eight goals as six players got in the scoring column. The Senators got one on the board at the 13:22 mark of the second period to make it 8-1. Jordan was able to stretch the lead back out to eight as he scored his first goal of the season just under four minutes in the second. Bates added one more before half to give the Wolves the commanding 10-1 lead at the break
 
With the large lead, the Wolves were looking to add more. With just 12 seconds into the second half, Freije was able to trot his way down the field and get his first collegiate goal of his career. Newberry continued to pour it on as Walsh and Sunderland was able to stretch the lead to 12 with under 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.
 
The Senators found their offense in the final frame, but it was too little, too late.
 
To go along with his first collegiate goal, Messersmith was able to win 12-of-14 face offs and have a game-high seven ground balls. Kyle Dunklee and Dan Sullivan added six ground balls each while Zachary Payne had four, respectively.
 
Payne and Freije solidified the Wolves defense, causing two turnovers each while five players had one each.
 
Erick Szurley went the distance once again in net, earning the win while making 12 saves on 19 shots faced.
 
The Wolves will return home this Saturday as the open up conference action against Catawba at 6 p.m.
