Wolves drop game to Catawba

Mansur notches fifth hat-trick of the season in the loss

NEWBERRY – The Newberry men's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the Catawba Indians by a final score of 11-8.

Dylan Mansur continued his hot scoring streak as he notched the game's opening goal just two minutes into the first quarter. Jeremy Ross added another goal less than a minute later to give Newberry an early 2-0 lead.

The Catawba Indians would respond with two goals of their own later on in the quarter to tie the game until Kyle Dunklee scored his first goal of the season to give Newberry a 3-2 goal advantage as the first quarter came to a close.

A three-goal spurt by the Catawba Indians to open the second quarter saw the Wolves fall behind for the first time in the game. Ross added his second goal of the game to bring Newberry within a goal until another Catawba goal in the closing minute of the half brought their lead back to a two-goal difference.

The Catawba Indians started strong following halftime, adding two more goals for an 8-4 lead. Newberry and Catawba would then proceed to trade goals up until the end of the game starting with freshman Brady Kearnan with 8:57 to go in the third quarter.

Mansur scored the final three goals for the Wolves, earning a hat-trick in the process, as Catawba would answer back with a goal for every Newberry one until the end of the fourth quarter.

Newberry will look to bounce back as they host Montevallo next Saturday, March 16 at 1PM. The Wolves are seeking revenge as the Falcons narrowly defeated Newberry in the program's inaugural match last season.
