Britten and Essex lead Wolves to near upset against No. 10 Anderson

Wolves nearly pull off upset over top-ranked Trojans

ANDERSON – In a tightly contested matchup featuring 12 lead changes and eight ties, the No. 10 ranked Anderson Trojans eventually pulled away with an 82-76 win despite a valiant effort by Newberry on Saturday evening at the Abney Center.

Anderson had their hands full with Newberry's dynamic duo of Shelby Britten and Meg Essex who combined for more than two-thirds of the Wolves offense in the game. Both seniors gave the well-rested Trojans problems on the offensive end throughout the game as Britten and Essex put up 28-points apiece.

Kelsey McDermott nailed two 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the game, pacing the Wolves offense in the first quarter. Britten followed McDermott's lead as she heated up with eight points with two 3-pointers as the Wolves commanded a 23-19 lead.

Britten didn't miss a pace in the second quarter as she made two more 3-pointers as she finished the half with a game-high 16 points. The Trojans took a five-point lead in the quarter until layups from Essex and Courtney Lyons tied the game at 40-all heading into halftime.

Anderson, the top-ranked team in the recently released NCAA Southeast Regional rankings, had trouble containing Essex under the hoop as the 6-3 center powered her way to 11 points in the third quarter. Britten continued her sharpshooting, hitting her fifth 3-pointer in the opening minutes of the quarter.

The Wolves trailed 62-60 heading into the final quarter of play. Newberry rallied to take the lead on a layup from Essex with 2:10 remaining in the game. The Trojans would retake the lead on back-to-back layups. With under a minute to play, No. 10 Anderson staved off an upset from the Wolves by hitting free throws in the closing moments of the game.
