HARTSVILLE – The Newberry women's basketball team took an early 20-point lead in the first quarter against the Coker Cobras, eventually leading to a 75-65 win on Wednesday evening at the DeLoach Center.
Fresh off a SAC Player of the Week award,
Shelby Britten churned out yet another impressive performance as she finished the game with 21 points with five 3-pointers. The senior also had six assists, five boards, and a steal to push the Wolves to victory.
Fellow seniors
Regan McCarty and
Meg Essex also had notable nights for the Wolves. McCarty ended the game with 16 points, making 4-of-7 shots from behind the arc, while also adding seven boards, five assists, three blocks, and a steal. Essex continued her efficient play as she scored 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
The Wolves started the game on an imposing 17-0 run before Coker earned their first points on a 3-pointer. Newberry would then respond with six straight points to take a 20-point lead. The Cobras would respond, however, as they trimmed the lead to a 40-34 Newberry advantage at the half.
Coker continued to rally in the third, cutting the deficit to as little as one point, until a 3-pointer from McCarty gave the Wolves breathing room. The Cobras stayed tough into the final quarter until back-to-back-to-back shots from behind the arc, courtesy of McCarty, Britten, and
Kelsey McDermott, put the game out of reach for Coker.
