NEWBERRY – For the second straight game Newberry's defense shined as the Wolves picked up a 64-51 win over Wingate on Wednesday evening at Eleazer Arena.
Newberry moves to 15-9 overall and 9-8 in SAC play while Wingate drops to 18-7 and 13-5 in the SAC.
The Wolves forced their opponent into a season low point total for the second straight game as Wingate struggled to find clean looks all evening, shooting a season-low 24.6% from the field.
On the other hand, Newberry found several clean looks to the hoop in the first half, using quick cuts for layups. Eight different Wolves scored in the first half, led by freshman
Madison Golden who quickly racked up a career-high 11 points in only 10 minutes, as the Wolves ended the first half with a 28-19 lead.
Newberry turned their defense into offense during the third quarter as they lead by as many as 17 after a
Regan McCarty 3-pointer. Wingate managed to cut the deficit to 45-43 with just under five minutes remaining until
Ke'Shaun White and
Meg Essex combined to score nine straight to give the Wolves a double-digit lead.
Shelby Britten added the dagger as she made her second 3-pointer of the game with 1:10 to go as the Wolves defeated Wingate by the largest margin of any opponent this season, 64-51.
The Wolves had four with double-digits for the second straight game in Britten, McCarty, Essex and Golden.
White also flourished off the bench as the sophomore scored a career-high eight points and rejected a shot from the Bulldogs in the final minute of play.
