Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SUMTER – The Newberry men's tennis team had an outstanding season-opener, dominating USC Sumter, 7-0, while taking care of Belmont Abbey, 5-2.
 
Doubles
Jose Navarro and Sean Nguyen showed why they deserved to be on the preseason All-SAC team as they went 2-0 on the day. Navarro and Nguyen dominated the Fire Ant's team of Israel Rojas and Albert Rocard, winning an 8-3 match. Navarro and Nguyen went on to defeat the team of Kent Shiell and Holden Ballard of Belmont Abbey, 6-3.
 
Edison Ambarzumjan and Enrico Haas kept the momentum going with a win against USC Sumter's Leonardo Zancheta and Lucas Rodrigues, 8-3. Ambarzumjan and Enrico remained undefeated on the day, defeating George Barfoot and Bailey Horne of Belmont Abbey, 6-4.
 
The team of Alex Amble and Lawrence Friedland went 1-1 on the day. They defeated the team of Joray Paladines and Nicklaus Neal 8-3 of USC Sumter. Amble and Lawrence fell to Belmont Abbey's Wlayimer Jimenez and Carlos Nolasco, 6-4.
 
Singles
Haas got Newberry going in singles action, defeating Paladines 6-0, 6-3 and then getting a come from behind win against Jimenez, 5-7, 6-0, 10-2. Nguyen went perfect in singles play, taking care of Rodrigues, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Nguyen got off to a slow start against Horne with the first set going 1-6. Nguyen settled in for the remainder of the match, winning sets of 6-1 and 10-6.
 
Ambarzumjan finished off his day strong, winning all his singles sets on the day. Ambarzumjan took care of Rojas, 6-0, 6-3 before defeating Barfoot, 6-2, 6-4. Navarro also finished the day strong, defeating Zancheta 6-4, 6-2 and going on the get the win against Shiell, 6-2, 1-6 and 10-6.
 
Amble and Friedland split their singles matches, both wins coming against USC Sumter.
