Newberry's defense contains Lincoln Memorial in 66-52 win

Wolves force Lady Railsplitters to a season-low point total in the win

NEWBERRY – Newberry had four players score in double-digits and held Lincoln Memorial to 20.8% shooting from the field in a 66-52 rout of the Lady Railsplitters on Saturday afternoon at Eleazer Arena.

The Wolves immediately took control of the game, scoring the first seven points, and never let their foot off the gas pedal in the game. Back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers from Regan McCarty and Courtney Lyons would extend the Wolves lead to 19 points in the second quarter.

Newberry smothered the Lady Railsplitters' high-powered offense all game, forcing LMU to shoot 20.8% from the field for a season-low 52 points.

The Lady Railsplitters managed to trim the lead to single-digits in the final minute of the third quarter, but another long-range shot from McCarty squashed any hope of a comeback for Lincoln Memorial as the Wolves cruised to victory.

Meg Essex led the way for the Wolves with 16 points, six boards, three assists and three blocks in only 24 minutes of action. Shelby Britten added 14 points while dishing out five assists.

McCarty also finished with 14 points while tying her career-high of four blocks in the contest. Kelsey McDermott added 10 points with seven rebounds to round out the scoring for the Wolves.

Brandi Hall dominated the glass in the game as she tied her career-best of 10 rebounds, including nine in the first half alone.

Newberry earned the victory in a Substance Abuse Awareness game, honoring Ellen Petty. Petty was a former women's basketball player at Converse that played under interim head coach Joanna Tincher, who was then leading the program. Petty tragically passed away of an accidental overdose two years ago. Her family has since started The Ellen 23 Foundation to raise awareness of substance abuse and help save young people's lives.

The Wolves wore their scarlet uniforms to signify substance abuse awareness and collected donations before the game.

Postgame Notes:
  • Newberry swept Lincoln Memorial in the regular season for the first time since 2010-11
  • Meg Essex now has over 1,600 career points for the Wolves
  • Britten is now tied for second all-time in Newberry history with 185 3-pointers
