National team playing in Olympic qualifers for Tokoyo 2020

NEWBERRY - Senior forward Daphne Heyaime, of the women's Newberry soccer team, is currently in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago with the Dominican Republic National team.

The Santo Domingo native was select as one of 19 players to join the country's national team. The team is currently in the Caribbean Qualifying Stage of 2020 Olympic qualifying, where 13 countries are playing in a round robin pool play. All the teams have been divided up into three different groups. The winner of each group will secure a spot into the eight-team 2020 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship, where two teams will advance to compete the 2020 Olympic Games.

Dominican Republic has been grouped into Group A, which consist of them, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, and the host country of Trinidad and Tobago. All the matches are being played at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva. Heyaime was not with the team for their first two matches, a tie with Saint Kitts and Nevis and a win against Aruba. She will be with the team when they play Antigua and Barbuda this afternoon at 2:30 p.m., and on October 8th at 5 p.m. against Trinidad and Tobago. 

Currently Trinidad and Tobago leads group A with six points, followed by Dominican Republic with four points, Saint Kitts and Nevis with one point, and Aruba/Antigua and Barbuda with zero.
