SUMTER, S.C. – Three members of the Newberry men's tennis team saw action at the ITA Southeast Regionals, capped by
Edison Ambarzumjan's second place finish in the men's open singles this weekend.
Men's Doubles
Ambarzumjan and
Jose Navarro led the only doubles team for the Wolves this weekend. The pair won 6-3 over Pierliegi Neri and Guillermo Ortego from Limestone before falling in the next round to William Anth Forsbert and Charlie Hutchings 6-4.
Men's Singles
Edison Ambarzumjan had an incredible run to the finals of the tournament. The Munich, Germany native started out with a 7-5, 0-6, 6-4 win before beating the ninth seeded Antonio Sabuguerio 7-5, 6-2. Ambarzumjan then won another three set match 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.
The junior won a 3-2 decision due to his opponent withdrawing from an injury. Ambarzumjan advanced to the finals where he met Kiranpal Pannu who was given the 1-seed for the tournament. Ambarzumjan run fell short as he was outed 6-3, 6-2 to take home second place at the ITA Southeast Regionals.
Sean Nguyen, a freshman, fell to Tales Silva 6-1, 6-1 and Navarro lost a tough match 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-0.
