Ambarzumjan helps Newberry secure victory over Catawba

Wolves sweep doubles competition

NEWBERRY – Edison Ambarzumjan won a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 nail biter to clinch the match and lead Newberry to an 8-1 win on Thursday afternoon.

The Wolves swept doubles competition with Jordan Monosky and Ambarzumjan putting Newberry on the board in the first flight with the 8-5 score. Duo Alex Amble and Jose Navarro added to the win column in the No. 3 spot 8-5, while No. 2 Angel Pizarro and Nikhil Mannepalli rounded out doubles in a tight 8-7 match.

Navarro (6-2, 6-3), Mannepalli (4-6, 6-2, 7-4), and Ambarzumjan fired off three straight victories in singles action to secure the win. Catawba garnered a point in the fourth flight, but Newberry rebounded with No. 6 Amble notching the 8-1 score. Monosky rounded out the pack in a 8-3 decision to send the Wolves' home with an 8-1 victory.

The Wolves will continue their road trek with a stop in Sumter, S.C. for a doubleheader against Belmont Abbey and USC Sumter on Saturday, March 24. First serve is slated for noon.
