Pitching shines for Wolves in doubleheader against Vikings

Only allowed one hit over 10 innings

NEWBERRY – Newberry took the win over Elizabeth City State on Sunday afternoon with a Game One final of 20-0 (in five innings) and Game Two score of 11-0.


Over the course of the 10 innings the pitchers only allowed one hit from Elizabeth City State's shortstop Taylor Jones.


The first contest saw three Newberry pitchers combine to complete a no-hitter. Emily Marchbanks started off the game in the circle, was later relieved by Selice Daley after two innings, and Newberry finished with Haley Simonds pitching the final inning.


Each pitcher tallied three strikeouts with Daley walking a pair. Marchbanks took the win and improved her win-loss record to 4-2.


Game Two placed Alyssa Ball on the mound to start, with Chelsey Cunningham to follow, and Simonds to finish out the contest. In Ball's one inning of pitching she saw one hit through four batters. Cunningham spent three innings in the circle facing nine batters. Simonds concluded the contest for Newberry with three strikeouts.


Ball notched her fifth win on the season.


Notable hitters from today were Daphne Peyton, McKenzie Barneycastle, Natalie Willis, and Allison Van Atta.


Peyton had four at bats on the day, added a run, two hits, with five RBIs. McKenzie Barneycastle cycled through five times, tallied three runs, and four hits. Natalie Willis posted five runs, two hits, and one RBI. Senior Van Atta had four at bats, four runs, two hits, and three RBIs.


Newberry is set to play Converse on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
