FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – Newberry dropped the doubles point in a road nonconference tilt with Emmanuel on Wednesday afternoon but came roaring back with four singles wins, including a three-set thriller from
Jose Navarro, to take a 4-3 decision.
Navarro and doubles partner
Sean Nguyen provided the only victory over the Lions in doubles competition, taking down their counterparts at the second flight by a 6-1 count. But Emmanuel took a tight win at the top flight and a 6-2 win at No. 3 to capture the doubles point.
Nguyen won handily at No. 4 singles, with
Edison Ambarzumjan (No. 1) and
Alex Amble (No. 6) also winning in straight sets. Emmanuel didn't concede a game at the fifth flight and also notched a win at the third, winning 6-1 in the first set and taking a spirited 7-5 second set, that left the match hanging in the balance.
Navarro, playing at the No. 2 position, had taken the first set 6-2, but Thembokwakhe Makhanya battled back to take a 7-6 win in the second and set up a winner-take-all third set. Navarro went on to prevail 6-4 to deliver the hotly-contested win to the Wolves.
