Softball Sweeps Lees-McRae on Opening Day

NEWBERRY – The Newberry softball team swept Lees-McRae on Opening Day at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday afternoon. Newberry blanked the Bobcats 9-0 and 6-0 after strong outings in the circle.


Newberry (2-0) scored six runs in the opening two frames on five hits in game one. Rachel Marion and Hailey Drawe recorded RBIs in the first inning.


Marion notched two more RBIs in the bottom of the second as Newberry pounded out three runs on three hits.


The Wolves then shut the door for the 9-0 victory. Emily Marchbanks collected her first win of the season, tossing 5.0 shutout innings.


Natalie Willis went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Marion and Drawe recorded two hits apiece. Sarah Tucker recorded the lone hit for Lees McRae (0-2).


Newberry once again got off to a quick start, scoring three runs in the first inning of game two. Haley Simonds crushed a three-run home run to left field to put the Wolves on the board.


Simonds collected two more RBIs in the fifth on a single after Willis and Tatum Johnson got on-base. Newberry used a strong performance by Devon Morrison in the circle, as she allowed just one hit in a shutout and struck out seven.


Willis scored two runs and recorded to hits for Newberry. Simonds recorded two hits and five RBIs to pace the Wolves. Noel Cassidy recorded the lone hit for the Bobcats in the second game.


Newberry will be home next Wednesday against Francis Marion (1-1). Game times are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
