Newberry Softball Falls Twice in Road Doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, NC – Newberry softball dropped both games of Saturday's SAC doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne, falling 5–4 in the opener before the Bears secured a 13–3 win in five innings in game two. The Wolves stayed within one run late in game one and struck early in the second game, but Lenoir-Rhyne used a series of multi-run innings to complete the sweep.

Game 1: Lenoir-Rhyne 5, Newberry 4

Newberry scored twice in both the third and fifth innings but came up just short in a 5–4 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne in game one of Saturday's SAC doubleheader in Hickory. The Wolves totaled six hits in the contest and stayed within one run late, but an early Bears surge proved to be the difference.

Avery Ingram provided the biggest swing of the game with a two-run home run, while Katie Henri finished with two hits and an RBI. Christine Butler and Brooke Hodges each added a hit and scored a run as part of Newberry's scoring efforts.

In the circle, Katie Kapusta started and worked four innings, while Samantha Minick delivered two scoreless innings in relief to keep the Wolves within striking distance late.

Game 2: Lenoir-Rhyne 13, Newberry 3 (5 innings)

Newberry plated two runs in the opening inning and added another in the fourth, but Lenoir-Rhyne answered with four-run frames in the second, fourth, and fifth innings before pulling away to secure the run-rule victory.

Bethany Pigg drove in two runs on a key base hit, while Haidyn Campbell connected on a solo home run as part of a four-hit effort for the Wolves. Butler and Ingram also recorded hits in the game. In the circle, Natalie Wescott made the start for the Wolves.

Newberry softball will face off against Tusculum in their final doubleheader of the 2026 season on Saturday at 1pm.
