MORGANTON, N.C. - A trio of Newberry players placed in the top five to seal the Wolves' second straight win of the season at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate. Their combined score of 274 in the third round ties the second all-time lowest total in school history.
The Wolves were the only group to finish under par in three rounds of action. Runner-up Belmont Abbey jumped four spots after shooting 28 over par for a combined score of 839. Lenoir-Rhyne, North Greenville, and Coker rounded out the top five. North Greenville's Evan Gfeller maintained the top spot for a winning score of 207.
"Winning a college golf tournament by 29 shots is a testament to how hard this team works and prepares," said head coach Howard Vroon. "This group is developing into a very strong team and it was evident this week, a fantastic showing from top to bottom."
Ben Thompson hopped three spots at the conclusion of play with a round-low 66 to come in one under par to take sole possession of second place. Thompson birdied on holes seven, eight, and nine after remaining even in the first six holes. His score ties himself for best performance since the second round of the UNG tournament last year.
Spencer Skiff and Harry Bolton followed right behind Thompson in third and fourth place, respectively. Skiff had three birdies on the day to finish two under par on the day, while Bolton shot four over par to drop two spots.
Carlos Leandro tied for seventh shooting four over par for a total score of 214. This is his second straight top-10 finish and he currently ranks eighth in NCAA Division II players.
Rob Cull rounded out the top 10 going five over par for a final score of 215.
Jean van Niekerk completes the pack with a combined score of 236 competing as an individual.
Newberry will return to action at UWG Matt Dyas Invitational on Oct. 23-24 at Carrollton, Ga.
