Wolves take down North Greenville Saturday

LEXINGTON, S.C. – The Newberry College men’s and women’s tennis teams both notched victories over North Greenville on Saturday afternoon. The men defeated the Crusaders 6-3 for their first win of the season, and the women won 5-4 at the Lexington County Tennis Complex.

The men move to 1-0 on the season and the women are now 2-0. This was North Greenville’s first match of the season for both squads and both are now 0-1.

The men's team is next in action next Tuesday at Southern Wesleyan, while the women are scheduled to travel to Columbia College on Oct. 7.

MEN: Newberry 6, North Greenville 3

The Wolves took the top two doubles matches and four of six singles matches to cruise to a win.

Jordan Monosky and Edison Ambarzumjan scored an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and the team of Angel Perez and Nikel Mannepalli won 8-4 in the No. 2 slot.

Monosky also won at No. 1 singles 3-6, 7-5 (10-5), while Ambarzumjan won 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Logan Atkins and Alex Amble clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 and a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 6.

WOMEN: Newberry 5, North Greenville 4

Amanda Carrillo and Maria Gomar won an 8-7 decision at the No. 1 doubles position. Veronika Vicgas and Kelly McManus scored an 8-1 win at No. 3.

Gomar defeated her opponent 6-7, 6-3 (10-5) at the No. 2 singles slot. Rebeca Martinez notched a 7-6, 6-4 at No. 4 and McManus clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6.
