WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry College tennis teams were both narrowly edged by nationally ranked Wingate Bulldog teams at the WU Tennis Complex on Saturday. Wingate claimed the South Atlantic Conference championships on both the men's and women's side with the decisions.
The men's team lost a 5-4 match to the No. 48 Wingate side, while the women's team was defeated 6-3 by the No. 39 Bulldogs.
MEN: No. 48 Wingate 5, Newberry 4
The men's match went to the final possible point, as the Bulldogs took a third set tiebreak at No. 6 singles to win the dual and clinch at least a share of the SAC Championship. Newberry falls to 18-4 overall and 7-3 in conference action with the loss. The Wolves close out their SAC schedule on Tuesday afternoon at Queens with SAC Tournament seeding on the line.
Wingate took two of the three doubles matches, with Newberry's lone point in that portion of the match coming in Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson's 8-1 rout at No. 2.
Svantesson claimed Newberry's first singles point with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4, with Newberry trailing 3-2 at that point. Monosky took a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3, making it a 4-3 Wingate lead. Newberry needed to take both remaining matches on the court to earn the dual win.
Fernando Espana battled back from losing the first set to earn a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles, placing the decision in the hands of the No. 6 singles matchup.
Richard Zeh took a 6-3 win in the first set, but lost the second set 6-4. In the third set, Wingate's Westin Bennett took Zeh to the tiebreaker and claimed the third set, 7-6 (7-2).
Following the Queens match, the Wolves host USC Aiken on Friday afternoon
WOMEN: No. 39 Wingate 6, Newberry 3
Tara Lamers picked up her 100th career win, but the Wolves fell to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the SAC as Wingate claimed an undefeated conference championship.
Elizabeth Williamson and Vanessa Ortiz teamed up at No. 1 doubles, as coach Mark Gardiner switched things up to try and take down the Bulldogs. Williamson and Ortiz won 9-8 (7-4) to take Newberry's only doubles point.
Wingate won the first two singles matches on the court and clinched the dual when Williamson was handed her first loss of the season at No. 1 singles.
Lamers battled to a 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 4 to earn career win No. 100 and Amanda Carrillo cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 to remain undefeated in singles on the year.
Newberry closes out the regular season at No. 42 Queens on Tuesday afternoon.
