ANDERSON - In a pair of marathon matches lasting over five hours each, the Newberry Wolves tennis teams were handed their first South Atlantic Conference losses of the season by the Anderson Trojans on Wednesday evening. The Newberry men lost their dual by a 5-4 score, with the women losing a 6-3 dual.
MEN: Anderson 5, Newberry 4
The Newberry men dropped tight matches throughout the dual to snap an 11-dual winning streak. The Wolves took a 2-1 lead in the doubles portion of the dual, with a key win at No. 1 by "Los Fernandos". Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous took a 9-7 win at the top flight. Jacob Svantesson and Jordan Monosky were edged by a 9-8 score at No. 2 and Richard Zeh and Logan Adkins earned an 8-4 win at No. 3/
Monosky and Svantesson rebounded from their doubles losses with wins at No. 3 and No. 4. The Trojans took wins at Nos. 1, 5 & 6 but the tipping point was when Tous retired from his match, pushing the result to Anderson.
Newberry falls to 17-2 overall and 6-1 in the South Atlantic Conference with the loss. The Wolves will host Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, April 2, for their next action.
WOMEN: Anderson 6, Newberry 3
The Wolves and Trojans split the singles portion of the dual, but Anderson took all three doubles matches to earn the dual win.
Newberry earned key singles wins, including Elizabeth Williamson at No. 1 singles. Williamson, who has been recently ranked No. 25 nationally and No. 6 in the Southeast Region picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win to remain undefeated on the season at 17-0.
Amanda Carrillo also remained undefeated on the season in singles play with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3. Carrillo is 16-0 on the season in singles action. Paula Avellan also earned a two-set win at No. 5 singles.
Newberry is now 16-3 overall and 6-1 in SAC action, with the Lenoir-Rhyne match on April 2 as the team's next action.
