Box Score 2 NEWBERRY - Following the big bat of outfielder Christina Linton, the Newberry Wolves earned a doubleheader sweep over visiting Alderson Broaddus on Saturday afternoon, picking up wins of 14-7 and 7-0 at the Smith Road Complex.
Newberry is now 17-7 on the year and has won seven straight contests. The Wolves will complete their non-conference schedule Wednesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against UNC Pembroke at home.
Game One: Newberry 14, Alderson Broaddus 7
- Linton went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and was a homer short of the cycle.
- Briana Clontz, Mallory Gerndt and Ann Dee Priest collected two hits apiece, with Priest driving in three runs.
- Jeri Loffler hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth and break open a tied game
- Devon Morrison got the win in the circle, moving to 4-3 on the year with 2.0 innings of perfect relief.
Newberry got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with free runs as Clontz walked and Gerndt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Wolves and early 2-0 lead.
Alderson Broaddus tied the game in the top of the third when Alexis Kimball hit an inside-the-park homer, but Newberry responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead. Natalie Willis drove in two runs with a single, Priest brought home a run with a single and Linton drove home a pair with a triple to make it 7-2.
The Battlers tied the game up with a bases loaded two-out rally in the top of the fifth with a walk and a grand slam.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Loffler gave the Wolves the lead for good with a solo homer to left. The scarlet and gray piled the runs on with a two-run Priest single, a two-run Linton double and an RBI single by Nicolette Myers.
Game Two: Newberry 7, Alderson Broaddus 0
- Devon Morrison picked up her second win of the day with a complete game, three-hit shutout. She upped her record to 5-3 on the season, striking out four and walking one. She retired 13 consecutive batters in the middle innings.
- Linton went 3-for-4 in the game with a homer and two RBIs.
- Allison Van Atta also notched two hits.
Newberry jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run Loffler single and a Briana Clontz RBI fielders choice. Linton brought home a run with a double in the second and Van Atta picked up a two-out RBI single in the third to push the advantage to 5-0.
Willis scored an unearned run on multiple errors in the fifth and Linton blasted her third homer of the season to right-center to cap the scoring.
