MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry College tennis teams opened their South Atlantic Conference slate with wins over Mars Hill at the Hart Tennis Center on Saturday. The Wolves' men routed the Lions by a 9-0 count, while the women took a 7-2 win.
The men's team is next in action at Erskine on Monday afternoon, while both teams host Carson-Newman in conference action on Wednesday afternoon.
MEN: Newberry 9, Mars Hill 0
After a tough day at Lander earlier this week, the Newberry men responded with a resounding shutout win.
The doubles pair of "los Fernandos" - Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous - took an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. They each won their singles matches easily, with Espana winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Tous winning 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2.
Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson earned an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Monosky would go on to take a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, while Svantesson won 8-4 at No. 4.
Logan Atkins won both his singles and doubles matches. He teamed up with Richard Zeh for the doubles win and took a simple 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6. Angel Pizarro took the 8-3 win at No. 5 singles.
WOMEN: Newberry 7, Mars Hill 2
The Wolves took five singles matches and two doubles matches to earn the win over the Lions.
MHU was a tough beat in the top flights of doubles play, as Amanda Carrillo and Vanessa Ortiz edged out a close 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers lost No. 2 doubles in a tiebreak, 9-8 (7-4). Newberry took a 2-1 lead into singles play with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles by Rebeca Martinez and Paula Avellan.
Williamson battled for a three-set win at No. 1 singles, while Carrillo at No. 3, Lamers at No. 4, Avellan at No. 5 and Martinez at No. 6 each took straight set wins.
