NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's and women's tennis teams took their respective South Atlantic Conference records to 5-0 with wins over Carson-Newman at Newberry HS on Sunday.
The men took a big 8-1 win, while the women earned a 6-3 victory.
MEN: Newberry 8, Carson-Newman 1
The only blemish on the Wolves' scoresheet came on a loss via injury retirement. The rest of the match was all Newberry.
The doubles sweep was keyed by an 8-6 win by "Los Fernandos" - Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous - at No. 1. Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson took an 8-4 win at No. 2 and Logan Atkins and Richard Zeh won 8-5 at No. 3.
Espana cautiously retired due to injury at No. 1 singles as the Wolves were only two wins away from clinching the dual. Tous took a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 2 in what would be the closest singles bout of the match.
Monosky and Svantesson rolled to straight set wins at No. 3 and 4, while Angel Pizarro at No. 5 and Alejandro Feliciano at No. 6 each picked up wins.
Newberry moves to an impressive 12-1 record with a 5-0 SAC record. The Wolves have two more South Atlantic Conference matches before Spring Break, starting with the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters at home on Saturday, February 27.
WOMEN: Newberry 6, Carson-Newman 3
Wins at the top of the lineup pushed the women to another conference victory. Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo started the dual off on the right foot for Newberry with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles
Williamson won her singles match at No. 1 by a 6-3, 6-2 score and a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3 by Carrillo put the Wolves just one win away from clinching. Rebeca Martinez won her match at No. 6 by retirement despite dropping the first set and a three-set win by Paula Avellan at No. 5 singles put the icing on the cake.
The Wolves are now 10-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play this season. The women are slated to play at Erskine on Thursday afternoon before a SAC match against LMU.
