CENTRAL, S.C. – The Newberry College men’s tennis team defeated non-conference opponent Southern Wesleyan 8-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Rev. Leroy C. Cox Tennis Complex.
Newberry is now 3-0 on the young season as Southern Wesleyan moves to 0-1.
The Wolves started out doubles play strong, winning all three matches. Jordan Monosky and Edison Ambarzumjan won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Angel Pizarro and Nihkil Mannepalli grinded out an 8-7 win at No. 2 and Logan Atkins and Richard Zeh were victorious 8-6 at No. 3.
Newberry continued its strong play in the singles flights, claiming five out of the six matches. Monosky defeated his opponent 7-6, 6-1 at No. 1 and Ambarzumjan was a 6-3, 6-7, 10-6 winner at No. 2.
Mannepalli won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 and Atkins defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5. Alex Amble rounded out the Newberry lineup with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 6 singles position.
The Wolves will play three matches Saturday in Brevard, N.C. Newberry squares off against Belmont Abbey, Mars Hill and Brevard. The first match will begin at 9:30 a.m.
