NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves' tennis programs opened up their 2016 spring season with wins by 7-2 scores over the visiting Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University at the Cannon Courts on Friday.
WOMEN: Newberry 7, Southern Wesleyan 2
The Wolves swept doubles action and closed out the victory with three easy singles wins. Elizabeth Williamson went 2-0 on the day, winning her No. 2 doubles match with Tara Lamers and picking up a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles.
Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo also went undefeated on the day, starting with an 8-2 win at No. 1 singles. Ortiz crusied to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles and Carrillo won a 6-0, 6-1 match at No. 3 singles.
Newberry also picked up a win at No. 3 doubles with Rebeca Martinez and Paula Avellan and Avellan earned a win at No. 4 singles.
Newberry's record is now 5-0 for the season.
MEN: Newberry 7, Southern Wesleyan 2
The Wolves' men also swept doubles action on the way to the win Friday. Three players went undefeated on the day, led by Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson. Monosky and Svantesson paired up for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles followed by easy singles wins - Monosky taking a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 and Svantesson earning a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3.
The all-conference pair of Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. and Alejandro Feliciano and Angel Pizarro picked up an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Newberry's record is now 6-0 for the season
