Wolves roll to wins over Emmanuel in first dual action of 2015-16

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Newberry College tennis teams both rolled to big wins over Emmanuel College in their first dual action of the season Sunday. The women's team cruised to a 9-0 shutout, while the men took a 6-3 win.

Newberry's next action comes on Saturday, September 26, in Tigerville as both teams will play duals against North Greenville and Spartanburg Methodist that day.

WOMEN: Newberry 9, Emmanuel 0
The Wolves only dropped one game in doubles play and only faced one tight match in singles play on the way to the dual shutout over the Lions.

At No. 1 doubles, Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo shut out their opponents 8-0, while the No. 3 pairing of Kelly McManus and Rebeca Martinez also shut out the Emmanuel players.

Elizabeth Williamson was taken to a tiebreak at No. 1 singles after losing the first set tiebreaker, but the rest of the singles players faced little resistance from their opposition.

MEN: Newberry 6, Emmanuel 3
Newberry went into the dual with five players, handing the Lions two wins by default, but the Wolves would only lose one contested match on the day.

The top flight doubles pairing of Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous cruised to an 8-0 win, while Jordan Monosky and newcomer Jacob Svantesson earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

Espana faced some challenges in the first set but swept the No. 1 singles match, while Tous, Monosky and Angel Pizarro each cruised to wins to clinch the dual.
