NEWBERRY - Following multiple reschedules, the Newberry College men's tennis team fell to the Erskine Flying Fleet 5-4 at the tennis courts on the campus of Newberry High School on Wednesday afternoon.
In doubles competition Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous fell to Wilson Mathewes and Jason Harris, 8-4. At the No. 2 match, Carlos Nicolopulos and Richard Zeh were defeated in a tight contest 9-7 against Andre Andre and Alan Pearce. The lone doubles win came at the No. 3 contest as Angel Pizzaro and Jordan Monosky defeated Yonelvin Gutierrez and Benny Uy 8-1.
At the No. 1 singles contest, Espana fell to Mathewes, 5-7, 6-4, 10-5. Newberry also suffered a loss at the No. 2 singles match as Tous dropped to Harris in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Pizzaro earned a singles win at the No. 3 contest over Pearce 5-7, 6-4, 12-10. Andre earned another win for the Flying Fleet as he defeated Nicolopulos in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Monosky won without blemish at the No. 5 matchup over Gutierrez 6-0, 6-0. Zeh defeated Uy in the No. 6 singles contest 6-2, 6-1.
Newberry travels to Hilton Head for Spring Fest with five matches across various locations in Hilton Head.
