JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn – The Newberry College men’s tennis team claimed a 6-3 victory against Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon inside the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
Newberry only gained one point of a potential three in doubles action. In the No. 1 matchup, Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous earned an 8-3 win against Stefano Daza and Garrett Duron. In No. 2 slot Carlos Nicolopulos and Richard Zeh fell 8-2 versus Juan Sebastian Perez and Kevin Mendes. An 8-4 result doomed the pairing of Jordan Monosky and Angel Pizzaro against Joao Pedro Oliveria and Austin Mackay.
Contrary to doubles competition, Newberry gained all but one point in singles action. At the No. 1 spot, Espana won his fourth singles match in his past five appearances as he defeated Oliveria in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. No. 2 matchup went the way of Newberry’s Tous as he claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win against Daza. The lone win for C-N appeared in the No. 3 matchup as Perez defeated Pizarro in three sets.
In the fourth set Nicolopulos claimed a three set victory against Mackay, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1. Monosky continued the winning ways for the Wolves in his 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 win against Mendes. Zeh closed out the afternoon earning a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Newberry returns to action on Sunday afternoon versus the Tusculum Pioneers at noon from Greeneville, Tenn.
