HILTON HEAD ISLAND – The Newberry College men’s basketball team earned a hard fought 5-4 win against Chowan University on Tuesday afternoon.
Newberry claimed two of the three doubles points en route to the one point win. At the No. 1 doubles match Fernando Tous and Fernando Espana were defeated by Farid Hajizada and Rafael Goncalves 8-4. Carlos Nicolopulos and Richard Zeh defeated Ivan Doubograev and Danilo Galovic 8-5. The No. 3 doubles contest went the way of Jordan Monosky and Angel Pizzaro as they defeated Tristan Martin and Sasha Kirsanov 8-4.
In singles action, each team took three victories aside. Newberry earned a victory at the No. 3 singles matchup as Pizzaro defeated Martin 6-1, 4-1 as Martin retired in the second set. The No. 5 contest went to Zeh as he defeated Enrique Barge 6-0, 6-3. Marko Sekulic defeated Carlos Ramirez in the No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-4, 13-11
Newberry’s Espana fell in the No. 1 singles contest. Nicolopulous dropped his No. 2 singles match and Monosky fell in the No. 4 contest.
The Wolves return to action against West Liberty at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Hilton Head.
