NEWBERRY – The Newberry College men’s tennis team fell to the Queens University Royals 8-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Newberry College’s Cannon Courts.
Newberry’s lone point came in the No. 1 doubles slot as Fernando Espana (Madrid Spain) and Fernando Tous (Spain) defeated Per-Erik Soler and Andor Vas 9-7. In the second doubles position Jules Athalis and Will Roberson defeated Newberry’s Richard Zeh (Petersaurach, Germany) and Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) 8-2. On the third court, Ole Meum and Zach Williams earned the 8-5 win over Angel Pizzaro (Madrid, Spain) and Jordan Monosky (Clearwater, Fla).
In singles competition Newberry was swept in all six singles contests. Soler defeated Espana 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 singles position. Athalis earned the three-set victory over Tous, 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 in the No. 2 position. Nicolopulous fell in the No. 3 match to Roberson, 6-2, 6-1. At the No. 6 singles match Monosky battled for three sets but fell to Williams 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.
Pizzaro fell to Vas in the No. 4 singles match 8-4, one of two singles matches to conclude after Queens clinched the match. In the No. 5 match, Zeh fell to Meum 8-4 as well.
The Newberry Wolves men’s tennis team returns to play against the Erskine Flying Fleet on Monday afternoon at 3 p.m.
