NEWBERRY - The Newberry College men's netters fell in a tightly contested match, 5-4, to the Catawba College Indians on Friday afternoon at the Newberry High School tennis courts.
Doubles competition began with Catawba's Mitchell McDonald and Lucas Miller earning the 8-3 win over Carlos Nicolopulos and Richard Zeh at the No. 2 matchup. Newberry claimed victory at the No. 3 ranked matchup as Jordan Monosky and Angel Pizzaro defeated Michael Patch and Iago Montero Nunez 8-6. Newberry took a 2-1 match edge with a victory at the No. 1 doubles contest as Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous defeated Pierce Hoover and Jack Mordey 9-8 (7-4).
Catawba was able to drawn even at singles competion in the No. 4 matchup as Patch defeated Nicolopulos in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In the No. 1 singles matchup, Hoover earned a straight set victory over Espana 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). The Indians also claimed the No. 3 singles matchup as Miller defeated Pizzaro 6-7, 6-1, 6-2.
The Wolves fought back to win the No. 5 singles contest with Monosky taking a 6-3, 6-0 victory against McDonald, to draw Newberry closer to 4-3. Tous brought the Wolves even at four points apiece with a win at the No. 2 singles match over Mordey, 7-5, 6-1. Catawba claimed the match with Nunez's victory at the No. 6 singles contest over Sekulic 6-0, 7-6.
Newberry is scheduled to travel to Carson-Newman at 1 p.m. on Sunday March 1st with match start at 1 p.m.
