BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team earned a tight 5-4 victory against SAC foe Brevard on Saturday afternoon to improve to 5-1 on the 2015 campaign.

Newberry began the match picking up two of three points in doubles competition, which proved to be the difference maker in the overall match score. At the No. 1 doubles matchup, Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous defeated David Taggart and Rory Northam 8-4. At the No. 2 doubles competition Carlos Nicolopulos and Richard Zeh fell to Nathan Sabate and George Finch 8-3. At the No. 3 doubles contest Jordan Monosky and Angel Pizarro blanked Christoph Plasa and Richie Liell 8-0.

The Wolves and Tornados split the singles matches at three wins per side. The No. 1 singles matchup went the way of Brevard's Taggart as he defeated Espana in consecutive sets 6-4, 6-2. At the No. 2 contest, Tous earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory against Finch. Newberry's Pizarro retired at 3-0 in the second set against Sabate after dropping the first set 7-5 in the No. 3 ranked singles matchup on the afternoon.

The Wolves dropped the No. 4 singles contest as Northam earned a three-set victory against Newberry's Nicolopulus 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.  Newberry earned a victory at the No. 5 singles match as Monosky defeated Plasa 6-0, 6-1. Marko Sekulic defeated Liell in the No. 6 singles match in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

Newberry returns to action on Tuesday at home with a conference matchup against Catawba at 2 p.m. in Newberry at the Cannon Courts.
