Wolves earn thrilling 5-4 victory over Lions

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College men’s tennis team earned a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Mars Hill Lions on Saturday afternoon at the Cannon Courts on the campus of Newberry College.

In the doubles competition the No. 3 doubles matchup Angel Pizzaro and Jordan Monosky defeated Blake Convington and Carlos Suares Riesco 8-1. The Lions won at the No. 2 doubles match as Alberto Ortiz and Markus Gattner fended off Carlos Nicolopulos and Richard Zeh 8-6. At the top doubles match Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous earned the 9-7 win over Equerio Guerrero and Sam Lee.

In singles competition Monosky got the action start at the No. 5 with a victory over Covington 6-0, 6-0. Riesco found the victory over Newberry’s Nicolopulous 7-6, 6-1 in the No. 4 singles matchup. At the top singles contest, Guerrero defeated Espana in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

The swing victory of the day came at the No. 2 singles contest as Tous defeated Ortiz in three sets including a third set victory where he gained six straight points to earn the 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory. In the No. 3 singles matchup Pizzaro defeated Lee in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. At the No. 6 singles matchup of the day, Gattner earned the 6-3, 6-4 victory over Marko Sekulic.

Newberry returns to action on Monday afternoon against the Erskine Flying Fleet at 3 p.m.
