TIGERVILLE - The Newberry College tennis teams each moved to 3-0 in dual action Tuesday with wins over North Greenville at the Vance Tennis Center. The men won 7-2, while a short-handed women's squad won 5-4.
The men's team is next in action on Thursday afternoon at Erskine, while the women are scheduled to resume action in the spring.
MEN: Newberry 7, North Greenville 2
The Wolves took the top two doubles matches and five of six singles matches to cruise to a win.
ECAC Player of the Month Jordan Monosky won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and took a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles with partner Jacob Svantesson. Svantesson also took a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
Fernando Tous went 2-0 on the day with a tiebreaker win at No. 2 singles and a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles with partner Fernando Espana. Also picking up wins were Angel Pizarro at No. 5 singles and Richard Zeh at No. 6 singles.
Newberry was also edged 5-4 later in the day in exhibition action against Spartanburg Methodist. Newberry fell behind 0-3 after doubles but Monosky, Svantesson, Pizarro and Zeh picked up singles wins.
WOMEN: Newberry 5, North Greenville 4
The Wolves dressed only five players, handing a pair of matches to the Crusaders by default, but wins at the top three singles positions clinched a win.
ECAC Player of the Month Elizabeth Williamson remained undefeated on the year with an easy 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and edging out a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles with partner Vanessa Ortiz. Ortiz also cruised to a win at No. 2 singles.
Rebeca Martinez and Amanda Carrillo picked up a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles and Carrillo's win in the tiebreaker of the second set at No. 3 singles clinched the match.
The Wolves also took a 7-2 exhibition win over Spartanburg Methodist which does not count towards official records. Newberry swept every contested match without dropping a game.
