NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves' men's and women's tennis teams picked up big wins over visiting Benedict College at Newberry HS on Sunday to close out the fall season.
The women's team swept the action 9-0 Sunday to finish their fall schedule with a 4-0 dual record. The men's squad defeated Benedict 8-1 and finishes the fall with a 5-0 dual mark.
WOMEN: Newberry 9, Benedict 0
After a close win at No. 1 doubles, the Wolves picked up momentum and didn't look back on the way to their second sweep of the fall.
Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo eked out a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles, with Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers earning an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. The Wolves went up 3-0 with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles by Veronika Viegas and Rachel Lovaas.
Williamson won via retirement at No. 1 singles and an easy win at No. 3 singles by Lamers clinched the win.
In the fall season, Newberry won 35 matches and lost only eight. The Wolves went 18-4 in singles and 17-4 in doubles in the non-championship portion of their year.
MEN: Newberry 8, Benedict 1
Another strong performance from start to finish pushed the Wolves to a 5-0 fall dual record.
The No. 3 doubles pair of Angel Pizarro and Alejandro Feliciano won the first point with an 8-0 win. Both the No. 1 doubles duo of Fernando Tous and Fernando Espana and the No. 2 doubles pair of Jordan Monosky and Jacob Svantesson won their matches 8-2.
Espana was edged at No. 1 singles in a third-set tiebreaker, but the Wolves swept the rest of the dual. Richard Zeh won at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-0) and Monosky won at No. 2 singles via retirement to clinch the bout.
Newberry went an impressive 45-9 in individual matches in the fall, with a 13-2 doubles mark and 22-7 singles record.
