CLEMSON - The Newberry College men's tennis team earned their first victory on the year as they defeated the Southern Wesleyan Warriors 8-1 at Nettles Park Friday afternoon.
Newberry began singles play as Angel Pizzaro defeated Loic Delaby 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 position. The Wolves' lead was extended to 2-0 after Jordan Monosky earned the 6-0, 6-2 win over SWU's Jacob Chesney.
The lone point against Newberry came in the No. 1 singles match as Fernando Espana fell to Camilo Sandoval in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. At the No. 5 match Richard Zeh defeated Matthew Plummer 6-1, 6-0. The lone match of the day that went to three sets came at the No. 2 position were Fernando Tous defeated Keegan Barkley 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. In the final singles match, Marko Sekulic defeated Alex Ballenger 6-0 ,6-2 in the No. 6 match.
At the No. 1 seeded doubles competition Espana and Tous defeated Sandoval and Barkley in a thrilling tiebreak set 8-7 (9-7). At the No. 2 match Monosky and Pizzaro defeated Delaby and Plummer easily, 8-3. The final doubles match saw Zeh and Sekulic defeat Chesney and Ballenger 8-2.
The Newberry College men's tennis team is back in action at Benedict on Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. in Columbia.
