Newberry set to start USC Aiken Invitational

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College volleyball team is set to enter the USC Aiken Invitational at the University of South Carolina Aiken this Friday and Saturday, September 13-14.

The Wolves are slated to play Lees-McRae and Limestone on Friday at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. On Saturday, Newberry will take on Francis Marion and host USC Aiken at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. For video and live stats visit the USC Aiken Invitational Tournament Central page.

  • Last week the Wolves went 3-1 in the Newberry College Invitational.
  • Senior Elayni Stokes earned first team all-tournament honors after recording 88 digs (5.50 digs per set) on the weekend
  • Senior Amanda Soper was a second team all-tournament selection after hitting .237 with 45 kills, 20 digs and 11 blocks.

 Scouting Francis Marion

  • The Patriots are entering their ninth season under 2014 Peach Belt Conference coach of the year, Paul McDonald. He has compiled a 139-113 record in his tenure at FMU.
  • In 2013 Francis Marion carried a 21-9 overall record and a 12-6 Peach Belt Conference record, earning them third place in the final conference standings. 
  • The Patriots return six letter winners from a year ago, two of which were starters.
  • Senior outside hitter Emily Sears returns as Francis Marion’s leading offensive threat. The 2013 Peach Belt second team all-conference selection hit .219 while leading the team with 355 kills and 3.17 kills per set.
  • Junior outside hitter Alexzandra Reed returns after finishing second on the team with 309 kills and 2.89 kills per set a year ago.
  • Senior setter Sloane Shank returns after dishing out 7.67 assists per set in 2013.
  • The Patriots went 2-2 last weekend when they hosted the Francis Marion University Invitational. FMU swept Mount Olive and took a five set thriller from Shorter on Friday. On Saturday the Patriots dropped a five set nail bitter to Erskine and were swept by Mars Hill.

 Series History vs. Francis Marion

  • Friday’s contest between Francis Marion and Newberry will be the 17th meeting since 1996.
  • The Patriots lead the series 11-5.

 Last Game vs. Francis Marion – Sept. 7, 2013

  • Newberry edged the Patriots 3-1, set scores were 25-23, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-17.
  • Samantha Parrish, Jessica King and Logan Hayward led the Wolves to the victory, accounting for 69% of Newberry’s kills.
  • The match was part of the Francis Marion Tournament.

 Scouting Lees-McRae

  • The Bobcats are entering their first season with Dave Schmidlin as the head coach. He previously served as the head coach of the men’s volleyball program at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
  • Lees-McRae went 2-29 overall last year and 0-18 in Conference Carolina play.
  • The Bobcats return only three letter winners, all starters. The team consists of nine freshman.
  • Sophomore Avalon Liscio is the leading offensive returner after leading the team with 296 kills and 2.77 kills per set.
  • Junior Jordan Banta had 146 kills and 121 digs in her 2013 campaign.
  • Sophomore Haylee Leonard returns after collecting 191 digs, 68 blocks and 77 kills in her freshman campaign. 
  • The Bobcats opened up the 2014 season by going 3-1 in the Winston-Salem State University Invitational last weekend in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. They swept Paine and dropped a five set thriller to Brevard on Friday. On Saturday they defeated Tuskegee and West Virginia State.

 Series History vs. Lees-McRae

  • This will be the fourth meeting between Newberry and the Bobcats since 1996. Newberry leads the series 2-1.

 Last Game vs. Lees-McRae – Sep. 6, 2013

  • The Wolves dominated the Bobcats in three sets, winning 25-11, 25-12 and 25-18. Senior Jessica King led the attack for the Wolves, hitting .385 for the match with six kills.
  • This match was part of the Francis Marion University Invitational.

 Scouting Limestone Saints

  • Brandon Skweres is entering his first season as the head coach of the men’s and women’s volleyball programs at Limestone. He served as an assistant coach for the past two seasons.
  • Limestone went 13-16 overall in 2013, largely in part to playing a tough non-conference schedule featuring many Peach Belt programs, but were 10-8 in Conference Carolinas play.
  • Regan Youngs returns as the leading offensive threat for the Saints. The 2013 third team Conference Carolinas selection finished her sophomore season with 295 kills, averaging 2.86 kills per set and 2.17 digs per set (223 digs).
  • Entering her junior campaign, Elayna Meachum comes back as the setter after dishing out 7.66 assists per set (590 assists) in 2013.
  • Erin Courtenay had 204 kills and hit .237 in her sophomore campaign.
  • The Saints started off the 2014 season 0-6 but have faced tough competition, facing only SAC and Peach Belt opponents.

 Series History vs. Limestone

  • This will be the 12th meeting between Newberry and Limestone since 1996.
  • Newberry holds the series 8-3 in that time span.

 Last Game vs. Limestone – Sep. 5, 2009

  • Newberry blasted the Saints in the first set 25-9 and after that the Saints battled back to win three of the next four (25-22, 22-25, 26-24 and 15-12). Fernanda Frey led Newberry with 23 kills, while hitting .296 for the match.
  • This match was part of the Limestone Labor Day Tournament.

 Scouting USC Aiken Pacers

  • The Pacers enter their seventh season under the reign of head coach Glenn Cox (98-91).
  • Last year the Pacers had an overall record of 19-13 and went 9-9 in the Peach Belt Conference, finishing sixth in the standings. They lost to the number one overall seeded Armstrong Atlantic in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship.
  • They return 11 letter winners and six starters, including their libero.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Stratton is the leading offensive returner after leading last year’s team in kills (268) and kills per set (2.33).
  • Sophomore setter Amanda Bologna led the team with 6.03 assists per set.
  • Sophomore libero Katie Toman is the leading defensive returner with 325 digs.
  • USC Aiken went 3-1 last weekend in the Inaugural Newberry Invitational. The Pacers placed three on the all-tournament team: Ashley Diedrich, Hannah Tierney and Monica Cardona. 

 Series History vs. USC Aiken

  • This matchup is the 21st matchup between these two schools since 1996.
  • USC Aiken leads the all-time series 16-4.

 Last Game vs. USC Aiken – Sept. 6, 2014

  • USC Aiken pulled out the five set upset of the Wolves last weekend in Eleazer Arena. The Wolves dropped the first two sets and then posted a phenomenal comeback to win sets two and three. However, the Pacers pulled out the victory in set five. Logan Hayward hit .250 in the match, recording 11 kills in 32 attacks. Elayni Stokes picked up 33 digs in the match.
