Wolves blow by Lions in 7-2 conference win

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry men's tennis team only dropped two matches as the Wolves pushed by the Mars Hill Lions at the Hart Tennis Complex, earning a 7-2 victory to wrap-up conference play.

Newberry (9-9, 6-5 SAC) earned a pair of 8-4 victories in doubles play against the Lions (5-12, 3-7 SAC) before cruising through singles play.

The Wolves earned a doubles win at No. 2 as sophomore Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) and junior Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) knocked off Joel Sturgis and Alberto Ortiz. Redshirt-junior Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) and senior Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) defeated Blake Covington and Markus Gattner at No. 3 doubles.

Senior Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) took down Euquerio Guerrero in straight sets at No. 1, while Espana topped Ortiz at No. 2. Chakir continued Newberry's straight sets victory streak at No. 4 as he toppled Sturgis.

Senior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) needed just two sets at No. 5 to defeat Covington, while Kiser edged Gattner in three sets at No. 6.

The Wolves return home on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. showdown with the No. 30 Limestone Saints.
