Wolves fall 9-0 to No. 33 Coker in final home SAC match

NEWBERRY - The No. 33 Coker Cobras proved too much for the Newberry men's tennis team as the Wolves fell 9-0 to the Cobras at the Cannon Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon.

After the Cobras (8-6, 8-1 SAC) cruised through doubles play, the Wolves (8-8, 5-4 SAC) looked to respond in singles play.

Much of singles play belonged to the Cobras, but it was the No. 1 singles match that saw the battle of the day.

A tightly contested first set between No. 22 Andre Staab and Newberry senior Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) went Staab's way. Staab, the No. 4 player in the Southeast Region, was unable handle Botelho in the second set as the Wolves' Brazilian cruised to a 6-3 set win. In a 10-point tiebreaker third set, Botelho saw an early set lead evaporate as Staab earned a victory.

The Wolves travel to Charlotte on Friday for a 1 p.m. match against the Queens Royals.
