SALISBURY, N.C. - The Newberry men's tennis team dropped only one point in the Wolves' 8-1 South Atlantic Conference victory over Catawba on Wednesday at the Johnson Tennis Center.
The Wolves (8-6, 5-2 SAC) swept the Indians (8-12, 1-6 SAC) in doubles action, led by an 8-3 victory at No. 2 by sophomore Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) and junior Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela). No. 1 singles saw seniors Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) earn an 8-6 win.
At No. 3 doubles, senior Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) and redshirt-junior Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) edged their opposition 9-7.
Singles play saw four victories from the Wolves in straight sets, while Saunders battled to a three-set win at No. 1. Botelho and Espana earned two-set victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
The final two singles points for the Wolves came at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. At No. 5, senior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) dropped only three games in his two-set victory. Kiser rounded out the team scoring for the Wolves at No. 6 singles as he knocked off his opponent in two sets.
The Wolves play host to Tusculum at noon on Sunday, before Coker travels to Newberry for the first SAC meeting between the Wolves and Cobras.
